AfroMidCentury in Interior Design
Mid-century modern (MCM) home decor is recognizable for its clean lines, a fusion of organic and manmade materials, and retro style. ‘Form follows function’ is one of the key principles that define mid-century modern design. In other words, furniture, objects, and buildings designed in the modernist style reflect their intended use.
What is AfroMidCentury Interior Design?
AfroMidCentury is very simple with sleek lines and a focus on functionality and uncluttered spaces. It pairs well with both vintage and modern homes alike.
Defined by organic shapes, minimal decor, and a focus on functionality, this style of interior design is undeniably timeless and relatively simple to emulate.
How to define AfroMidCentury (AfroMCM)?
Furniture
Mid-Century Modern furniture is characterized by its clean lines, gentle curves, and organic shapes. Unique shapes took hold through curved and almost round sofas, odd shaped coffee tables, and even geometric shapes that felt angular and clean. The most popular examples is the Eames chair which is a hallmark of the look.
Colors
Traditionally, the midcentury palette ranged from bright hues in the 1950s to warmer earthy tones in the 1960s, leaving a lot of room for flexibility. Teal, tangerine, mauve, mustard — are the colors in addition to a neutral color palette in MCM style. These colors are vibrant, but not overwhelming.
Fabrics and Materials
Most authentic midcentury modern furniture is made from teak.
Although predominant, wood was not the only material used in MidCentury, metal, glass, and vinyl, were often used in tension with each other to create furnishings in curved shapes and giving it a unique look.
